Don’t worry, kids; Jim and Teal are not afraid of Beau is Afraid, and neither should you.
So far, the summer movie season has been a bit of a bust; blockbuster after blockbuster failed to materialize. That picture may change slightly with the coming of Mission Impossible Seven, Oppenheimer, and Barbie. But don’t despair. Jim and Teal have some recommendations.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Yeah, no one is crazy about that title, and Jim was less than enthusiastic about the movie. It breaks his heart to reveal that the latest installment of the legendary series may have been better left unearthed. While the film isn’t a total miss, Jim couldn’t find much in the movie to recommend. Still, die-hard fans will probably check it out, and Jim wouldn’t blame them if they did.
One film Jim and Teal caught in theaters was Wed Anderson’s latest, Asteroid City. In a summer filled, yet again, with sequels and IP, it is refreshing to find a little film with some heart, soul, and a crap-ton of idiosyncratic sets, costumes, performances, and all the other Wes Anderson trappings that only he can provide.
In this episode, Jim and Teal also discuss:
Sick of Myself the hidden gem from Norway that any fan of dark comedies like Triangle of Sadness will enjoy.
Beau is Afraid, Ari Aster’s Oedipal fever dream crammed with enough awe-inspiring film language-altering stuff to fill two BFI 250 lists.
O Lucky Man, Lindsey Anderson’s 1973 picaresque epic satire of British industrialism and colonialism run amok. Anderson spares no institution in this madcap three-hour extravaganza. Teal and Jim spoke once before about this movie, but Teal found some interesting parallels between this movie and Beau is Afraid that he wanted to explore.
